I made my first documentary in fourth grade. My family’s clunky handycam never left my side as we drove around the Midwest, visiting every childhood home of author Laura Ingalls Wilder. I directed my sisters as the “reporters” and edited the footage by connecting two VCRs together. The Little House News, while not an award winner, revealed an early interest in motion pictures.
In another favorite childhood photo, I am wearing my mom’s nursing cap and holding a baby doll who had just been “born.” As a kid, my imagination veered outside the normal role-playing of bank and school: I used to deliver babies (in actuality, Cabbage Patch dolls) by telling my sisters to breathe and push.
In my late 20’s I realized that photographing bellies and babies, while I love it, was not enough to satisfy my “bug” for birth. I started attending births as both a doula and birth photographer. I also embarked upon a long wished dream of nurse-midwifery; I am obtaining my Master's in Nursing at the University of Minnesota.
I now lovingly juggle the roles of photographer, filmmaker, doula, and student. Someday, I will be a midwife. Until then, I am learning how to be….
If you need a photo, a movie, or a knowledgeable support person at your baby’s birth, I’m happy to help in any or all of these ways.
